Hobo Junction is one of the 90’s Hip-Hop super-groups formed in the Bay Area, alongside Digital Underground and Hieroglyphics, and they formed at a time when Hip Hop was still in the streets. At that time, you could buy a tape directly from the Hobo Junction on Telegraph or Durant Ave in Berkeley, blocks from Cal. The Hobo Junction-born duo of Choppa Saan and Mr. Taylor made up the rap group known as the WhoRidas who are, by themselves, a dominant force in the history of Bay Area Hip Hop, with street hits like 1997’s “Shot Callin’ and Big Ballin’” and 1999’s “the Dock of the Bay” being two of the Town’s favorites. Two decades later, only the very distinct voice of Choppa Saan remains, and the WhoRidas has turned into a brand, which Choppa Saan releases music through. With the recent transition of Mahasen of Hobo Junction, and the on-going health battles of Hip Hop legend Saafir, Choppa Saan is the lone ranger holding up the Hobo Junction flag in today’s music scene, check out this Oakland Hip Hop legend in his own words.

JR Valrey: What’s the new project about? What does the production sound like?

Choppa Saan: The WhoRidas new album is about business. Keeping business and brand alive. The WhoRidas is trademarked now, so the brand is official and that’s the foundation of the album’s tone/theme. Being that I (Chop Black/Choppa Sann/King Sann) is the sole member now, The WhoRidas is the brand, and I will feature with other artists. The sound of the project is next level in the game – fire.

JR Valrey: Where have the Whoridaz been over the last few years? What have y’all been up to musically?

Choppa Saan: The WhoRidas, for the past years have been working doing solo projects, acting opportunities, and creating businesses. Since the last WhoRidas album, Chop Black aka King Sann /Choppa Sann has released 2 solo albums and 3 mixed tape/CDs and many features with various artists.

JR Valrey: How is your brother the legendary rapper Saafir?

Choppa Saan: My Brother SAAFIR is doing well. He’s still strong and fighting and surviving; doing very good. I love my big bro, he’s solid. Thank you to everyone for all the love and support for my Big Brother. I truly appreciate it.

JR Valrey: We are fast approaching the 1 year anniversary of the passing of your Hobo Junction sister Mahasen, who had bars. What do you miss most about her and her lyrical style?

Choppa Saan: Aw man. My sister Mahasen. I miss her so much. I’m sending love and prayers to their daughters and family. I truly miss talking with her, knowing she’ll be there to supply that metaphysical conversation, the energy and the universal  reassurance she gave me, always when I needed it. Her music is ahead of its time. Her flow and dual-threat rapping and singing was top notch.

JR Valrey: Can you tell us a little bit about your security/protection business? What do you specialize in?

Choppa Saan: My private security / executive protection business is a company I own, and it’s based in Los Angeles, Ca. I specialize in private personal protection / security for entertainment, estate, and commercial i.e. (private persons, entertainers, businessmen and women, private events, estates and businesses.)

JR Valrey: Can you talk a little bit about your fitness regimen, why is that important to you?

Choppa Saan: My fitness regiment workouts are important because it’s imperative to the balance of my life and lifestyle. The discipline it takes to be consistent in eating healthy and training hard, reverberates to the discipline in my life. When you start there’s a “need”. Then it becomes a “want”. You wanna become better at training. Then after the need and wanting to become better, you do! Then it becomes a “lifestyle” because you wanna sustain what you have gained.

JR Valrey: What do you want people to get out of your new project?

Choppa Saan: What I want people to get out of my new project is a breath of fresh air. A dope, speaker banging, enthusiastic, inspiring and all out fire project. Track after track, back to back. The WhoRidas have a few projects being released this year that will definitely satisfy the eardrums of people who love dope music.

JR Valrey: How has covid affected you as an artist?

Choppa Saan: As an artist I can’t say covid has affected me in a personal way since except for performing and being in venues. It has reminded me that although people have their different opinions on the matter, as a community we have to take our health more seriously.

JR Valrey: Since COVID prohibited venues from operating at capacity, how do you plan to promote this project other than social media?

Choppa Saan: Due to all the restrictions, because of covid I plan to promote this project through social media as you know, the internet via video streaming outlets, digital promo ads, and all shows that can be booked.

JR Valrey: How could people hear your music and purchase it? How could people contact you about protection services?

Choppa Saan: Everyone worldwide can find all The WhoRidas and Chop Black music on all streaming platforms.
