Mauizm Herbal Alchemy is a very innovative local business in Oakland, run by a Black woman herbalist, named Maua. She is in high demand, while we are in the Covid 19 pandemic, considering that a large population of Black people in this country are refusing the vaccine, and looking for natural ways to heal themselves from Covid 19 and other ailments, since hospitals have been the main battlegrounds where big pharma is accomplishing its goal of experimenting on the general population.

It is on Black media to inform people about alternative opinions and ideas, other than to just comply with the government, mass media, and big pharma’s call to get the “jab”. Historically, we know that none of those 3 entities have ever looked out for Black people in this country, so if they tell us to go right, we might want to explore going left, since the past has taught us that they can not be trusted.

The natural world has proven over time its healing powers, which exceed those of the corporations that make up big pharma. In fact big pharma studies nature to try to discover and exploit its secrets, not the other way around. Check out the Oakland herbalist Maua, the owner of Mauizm Herbal Alchemy, as she sits with Black New World Media in this exclusive interview.

JR Valrey: What made you want to get into the world of herbs? How long have you been studying and working with herbs?

Maua: I’ve always been well informed about holistic health & plant medicine based on my upbringing. My parents always had good friends and folks in the community who were healers and educators, and I came up being able to observe these different modalities.

I’ve been studying and working with herbs for about 4 years. I started by ordering a few herbal blends, to make infusions for personal use. An infusion is like a really strong and concentrated herbal tea.

We can say that once I hit the world of herbalism, I was hooked! I knew that my mind, body, and soul found a home in herbalism.

JR Valrey: What made you make a business out of your passion for herbs? And what products do you offer?

Maua: For my first couple years of learning and indulging in the world of plant medicine and herbalism, I wasn’t intending on creating a business right away. I knew that I had a lot to learn, and I wanted to do everything with integrity. I knew that it was important for me to be qualified enough, to offer my services to the community.

Eventually, folks in my inner circle started to ask questions regarding herbs and basic health that I was able to provide answers to. They were experiencing ailments that I was able to address, and lots of times they trusted me more than their “traditional” practitioner to give them honest feedback and direction.

I made blends for my loved ones and let them into my world of herbalism, organically, based on what they wanted and needed.

It came to a point where the demand around me aligned with my knowledge & passion for plant medicine, and to meet the demand of the folks around me, I started Mauizm Herbal Alchemy.

I guess you can say the collective made it clear that they felt confident in my skill base and trusted me to serve them, with integrity and grace. They made me take that leap. It’s an honor.

JR Valrey: Why is it important for Black people to have a basic foundational knowledge about herbs, especially during pandemic times? What do herbs do?

Maua: It’s important for our folks to have a basic foundational knowledge about herbs and plant medicine as a whole, because it’s actually where we come from! This is ancient knowledge that we all have lodged in our DNA as aboriginal people. It just needs to be reawakened, most of the time, due to the severe programming we’ve endured over the centuries. It’s about relearning what we already know on a cellular level.

A lot of us have families. It’s imperative that we have the confidence to take our healing into our own hands, when there’s a lot of mistrust in the western medical system due to this pandemic.

Medical professionals are overworked, hospitals are overcrowded and a lot of us are not receiving the level of care that we once had, prior to the pandemic. This is an obvious sign that it’s on us, to ensure our health and the health of our families.

During these pandemic times, I’ve noticed a lot of fear and chaos jumping around, which is detrimental to our mental and physical health. Stress lowers the immune system, and we know an optimal immune system is the key to us all living in a state of blissful wellness.

Plant medicine and herbalism has played an integral role in us as a community successfully  getting through this pandemic. We have a surplus of herbs at our fingertips to support our wellness by successfully naturally preventing illness and assisting in recovery of those who fall temporarily ill.

I consider herbs to be plant allies, that we have the honor of working alongside in this lifetime, on this earth. We are all an equal facet of nature. I believe herbs have been put here to assist us in maintaining health and alignment of mind, body and soul.

Herbs saved my life. Literally.

JR Valrey: Can you talk a little bit about sea moss? What is it? And what makes it an important product that you carry?

Maua: Sea Moss is a plant algae that contains 92 of the minerals that the human body is composed of.  It contains iron, calcium, phosphorus, chromium, selenium, and iodine, amongst many other essential vitamins and minerals. We use it to clear mucus from the body, calm inflammation, boost immunity and support a healthy thyroid.

It’s an important product that I carry, due to its growing popularity and the demand for it in recent times. I know how important trust is when folks seek out self-healing products, so I’ve been big on making sure I create the highest quality sea moss gel and source it with the same intentions.

A lot of folks consume it in smoothies and juices, as well as popsicles and gummies. Mauizm Herbal Alchemy will be having gummies available soon.

JR Valrey: What are your feelings on the ever expanding vaccine mandates in this country?

Maua: As far as the vaccine mandates, I’ve just been sitting back and observing the shifts as they come. I’m a huge believer in self-accountability and that’s why I’m in the business of health education and directing people to self healing.

JR Valrey: What are your thoughts on Oakland Unified School District mandating that all students under 12 years old, having to be vaccinated next year?

Maua: I believe that it’s our responsibility to ensure quality education for our own children.

If the districts that we’ve allowed to do our job for us, are now mandating vaccinations that some parents disagree with, then I believe it’s in the best interest of the parent to provide an environment that supports their personal health standards, even if it means looking outside of the district.

JR Valrey: Can you tell us about 3 herbs and their healing properties?

Maua: My 3 favorite herbs are Nettle, Marshmallow, and Burdock.

I love these herbs because they’re super appropriate for daily use and cover a wide array of benefits that we definitely need on a daily basis.

I use Nettle for a daily dose of vitamins and I usually drink it as a tea or infusion. It’s also a great source of chlorophyll and gentle enough to use daily for the whole family. It’s popular amongst those who are looking for natural ways to fight inflammation, lower blood sugar, and keep blood pressure in balance.

We use Marshmallow root to protect our gut linings and our respiratory tract. It’s widely used amongst those recovering from colds and flus, as well as ulcers of the GI tract.

Lastly, Burdock has a special place in my heart and apothecary. It’s very high in iron, removes toxins from the blood, and is rich in anti-oxidants.

JR Valrey: How can people buy your products and contact you online?

Maua: My products are available on My Etsy shop!
